A piece of my heart finds its voice…
My artistic voice is an intimate canvas where my personal experiences, observations of the natural world, and the depths of my inner thoughts and emotions converge. Rather than attempting to convey specific meanings through my work, my focus is on the expression of emotions—emotions that are inherently personal to each person, open to interpretation, and fluid.
Wood, with its malleability, organic essence, renewable nature, and warmth, has naturally become my preferred artistic medium. In the silent language of trees, I listen, and my passion lies in allowing its voice to be heard.
My work spans the spectrum from optimistic anticipation to melancholic reflection. I am drawn to the intricate dance between love, resilience, and compassion, each finding its place as a recurring motif. This is my voice, unflinchingly personal — and earnestly grateful for the privilege of translating the complex tapestry of my inner world into tangible art forms.
“A Reflection upon Greatness”
-written by my late uncle, Puryear Mims, whose sculptures have inspired me for as long as I can remember…
The wood sits upon a pedestal
And I consider it.
Not as It is now, a gnarled mockness of death
or of it being five feet by a circumference of pi
or its loss being my gain in barter
(the truth is not bartered)
the wood is there and I am here
and I consider it.
The seasons have their effect
subconscious upon the mind
visible over thirty years upon the last ring of growth
and I consider the seasons before me
the same ones that this wood
has fought and endured with me.
I cut it with reverence
Its beauty must not be dissolved by the chisel
but enhanced
I direct as I am directed
Is it not true of all inequalities
The wood has had his day
I cannot have mine without him
